The article, The 1 Networking Rule 99 Percent of People Are Afraid to Follow, but Should by Nicolas Cole really resonated with me.
Like Nicolas, I have spent a lot of time and money at association meetings trying to shake hands and expand my network. This has served my business but it gets old. Even worse, when I have attended these events recently most of the people are standing around looking at their phones.
I now attend association meetings when there is a topic or speaker I am interested in. If I meet a few people while I am there, that is a bonus. The time and money I am saving by not networking the old fashion way is spent getting involved in other interests where I am meeting new people for fun and/or meaningful activities. It is a better way to get to know people and get networked through quality introductions.
